Employment Opportunity: One-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in

Applied Aquatic Community Ecology and Paleolimnology in

Boreal Waters

The Cooperative Freshwater Ecology Unit (CFEU) at the Vale Living With Lakes Centre (LWLC) is seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Fellow to lead peer- reviewed research products addressing pure and applied information regarding community response to environmental change in boreal aquatic ecosystems. This research will tackle pressing environmental concerns from some of the world’s longest running continuous water quality monitoring programs. This position will involve significant autonomy, and the candidate will help to develop future research areas. The successful candidate must have completed a PhD in a relevant area of study, have a demonstrated ability to publish peer-reviewed research, and possess strong quantitative and data management skills. This position can be held remotely or in-person at the Vale LWLC at Laurentian University (LU) in Sudbury, Ontario. The position will be co-supervised by MECP Research Scientist and LU Adjunct Professor, Dr. Brie Edwards, and LU Assistant Professor, Dr. Liz Favot.

Research themes will include:

Tracking long-term biological, chemical and physical change in inland lakes and streams in the boreal region of Northern Ontario utilizing both monitoring records and sediment cores.

Community-based assessment of ecological responses to local and regional environmental stressors including acidification and climate change.

Determining pre-disturbance/baseline conditions and natural variability at the base of aquatic food webs to guide management and conservation efforts.

Qualifications:

PhD in the fields of biology, aquatic ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline.

First-authored publications in respected journals in these fields.

Proficiency in data analysis and mining large datasets is advantageous.

Previous experience or willingness to learn microscopy skills for paleolimnological analysis of diatom or chironomid communities.

Experience leading a team of researchers connected virtually across disparate locations is an asset for candidates interested in pursuing the remote option.

Compensation: $65,000/year (negotiable based on level of experience) plus benefits

Start Date: Negotiable between October 7 and November 4

How to apply: Please email a cover letter, unofficial graduate degree transcript or proof of PhD completion, C.V., and contact information for three referees, to Dr. Brie Edwards (bedwards2@laurentian.ca) cc to Dr. Liz Favot (efavot@laurentian.ca) with “CFEU Postdoctoral Fellowship” in the subject line. All applications will be reviewed as they are received, but only those applicants invited for an interview will be contacted.
